Mallory Hawk - Revolver

Producer, Electric Guitar, Fretless Baritone Guitar, 12 String Guitar, Drums, Bass, Keys, Percussion

This is a favorite of mine! Mallory wrote this one pretty late in the recording process for her album, “Chinook”, but it immediately became clear it had to be on the record. I remember we talked about if it was “too poppy” but a great song is a great song.. We recorded this one over two days at Retro City, an amazing studio owned by my friend Andy Clarke. I had recently bought this strange fretless, baritone guitar with a rubber bridge and this was the first official recording it made it on. Mallory played an Evertune guitar just for the scratch track while I recorded drums. She hated it but I still think they have merit!

This one also features beautiful background vocals by Ava Mirzadegan. She came in on day two and just nailed everything we threw at her as well as came up with a bunch of her own stuff. I love the way her voice blends with Mallory’s on this track. They are both taking very different approaches but they work so well together.

The reverse guitar was done on a ‘78 SG. I had everyone there take a stab at it (Mallory, engineer/mixer Mark Watter and assistant engineer Kyle Balkin). When it came time to comp we used a little piece of everyone’s part which is special to me.

The music video was done by my brother who also played bass on a track from the album.
